National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month
November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month; it’s a month that puts special focus on this disease that effects so many. The Alzheimer’s Association website recently posted a Q & A (10/31/23) with actor Don Cheadle about his family’s Alzheimer’s journey with his mom, Bettye Cheadle, who died in 2016. Mr. Cheadle spoke on the toll the diagnosis took on the entire family and of the demands on those in the caregiving role. Mr. Cheadle recounts what was one of the hardest things for him about his experience.
I found that one of the cruelest things about the disease that happens is when the window opens for a moment, and your loved one is back, and you can have a conversation with them. Then that window closes again, and you remain hopeful that somehow that opening is going to lead to them coming back. It’s just a cruel joke.” The article is a profound account of his family’s experience, and we would encourage those interested to go to http://act.alz.org to read the full story.
