Older Americans have important lessons for all of us! May is Older Americans Month. It’s a time for us, as a nation and as individuals, to “shine a light on lessons, experiences, and issues that arise with the aging population.”
This year’s theme is “Age My Way” with a focus on exactly what the HELPERS mission is—providing services and supports so that older adults can age in place, at home, and live independently for as long as is safely possible. Here are 10 Life Lessons You Can Learn from Older Adults (Source: www.theodysseyonline.com).
- Life isn’t short if you don’t live it that way. Strive to enjoy every moment.
- Adaptation will come with the changes you make. Be resilient.
- Youth is a blessing. Enjoy your youth; it won’t be with you forever.
- Enjoy the world around you. Travel often and enjoy the little things when you do.
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
- Your life is all yours. Stop worrying about what others think.
- Stay off your high horse. Be humble; you never know what someone might be going through.
- Be mature but learn when to lighten up. Find humor in the little things.
- Don’t take everything to heart. Again, you never know what someone is going through so if someone snaps at you, walk away. It doesn’t make them a bad person, just means they’re having a bad day.
- Never lose compassion. Be positive and treat others with kindness.
