Optimism definition: Hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something.
Betty White described herself as a “cockeyed optimist” and was only a couple weeks away from 100 when she died. We all know she lived her life with great humor in her approach to life. A recent study found that optimism, looking on the bright side of life, increases longevity. This study published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society in 2022 found that participants with a tendency toward optimism were more likely to live to the age of 90 and beyond. The study notes that while optimists have a positive outlook on life, they are also pragmatic. So, when faced with life’s inevitable challenges, they tend to look at those experiences as learning opportunities. It also notes that optimism can be learned, even in later life! We can maintain an optimistic attitude by finding humor in the challenges that come our way and learning how to laugh at ourselves. Practicing daily gratitude, focusing on positive self-talk, maintaining social relationships, and reframing negative thoughts are additional ways to increase optimism and longevity. We can’t stop aging, but optimism will increase our chances of living a longer and happier life. (Source: [email protected])
